The resort my husband booked for our recent vacation turned out to be an attraction in itself. It was an elegant chateau surrounded by majestic mountains overlooking a pristine lake. First-class dining, day spa offerings, beautifully appointed rooms and a friendly, accommodating staff invited us to relax and escape in style. Located just a bit out of town and off the beaten path, this resort made us feel we were on the edge – of the world, that is, with an incredible view and a rejuvenating perspective.
No matter how great your life is, it’s always nice to step away from your daily realities and recharge your batteries. For me, this meant little to no responsibilities with the kids at their grandparents’ and housekeeping personnel performing the tasks I usually do at home. What a treat!
But the best part of the vacation was spending three glorious days with my husband. We ate filet mignon while watching the sun set over the lake. We strolled hand in hand like we were dating. We slept in until 10:00 a.m., which is probably the first time since our eldest daughter was born in 2002. We watched the season finale of our favorite television show without interruption (any fans of The Office out there? What about all those cliffhangers?!?). We talked and talked and talked and never ran out of things to say. We discovered that we still not only love each other but really LIKE each other and enjoy hanging out, just the two of us.
Of course, we knew that last sentence was true even before taking the trip, but something about getting away from it all and focusing on our relationship as a couple – not just as parents raising children together – was really beneficial. The chateau provided the perfect backdrop with its breathtaking views and incredible beauty.
I’ve never been much of a risk taker, but I just might learn to love living on the edge after all.
