You gotta love Catholic schools. In addition to receiving a quality academic education, our daughter attends religion class several times a week and has become very inspired in her Christian faith, especially during this Lenten season.
As you know, Lent is the period of time – 40 days – between Ash Wednesday and Easter where believers are encouraged to fast, pray, study the Bible and make sacrifices to honor the great sacrifice Christ made for us. (Actually, these activities are encouraged year-round but even more emphasized during Lent.)
Our oldest llama came home from kindergarten on Ash Wednesday this week and announced that she would only require an apple for dinner (her idea of fasting) so that she could get back to praying and reading her Bible. She also wanted to give up TV because she couldn’t give up playing computer games since we seldom let her do that anyway and that, therefore, would not represent much of a sacrifice.
Then I asked her if she wanted to go to the grocery store with me, and here was her response:
“Will that help my soul?”
(Seriously…her verbatim answer.)
I could not recall a place in the Bible where it said, “Thou shalt not shop at Kroger” but on the flip side, could not come up with a compelling way in which her soul would be enhanced by the errand, either. So I let it go.
Her religious fervor has waned a bit in the past few days. She has eaten regular meals (albeit meatless ones on Ash Wednesday and today) and decided that God would approve a couple of TV programs, Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody (which also happen to be her favorites). However, she has continued to “read” her Bible with our help and pray more.
I’m thinking that even by Catholic school standards, keeping two out of four Lenten resolutions isn’t bad.
